Meeting Friends in Xenia

I had a nice contact with WA2JSG Curt in New Jersey this evening.  We've worked CW many times over the years.  However, last week we worked the SKCC Booth at Hamvention on Friday afternoon and had a nice chance to meet in person.  Making friends on the air over the years, followed by meeting in person at a Hamfest, is a great part of the radio hobby.   Thanks Curt for the contact!

Montezuma County QRP

61 degrees, finally a day without rain, partly cloudy

The QRP contact today was pretty easy with all the activity for CQ WPX CW.  I was able to make contact with WT7V in Ohio using 5 watts on 20 meters.  WT7V may be a new prefix for me, and is definitely my first contact in Montezuma County Colorado.  Thanks Joseph.

On experimentation and allocation of the radio spectrum

I'm catching up on stacks of print media and came across another great editorial by Tom Gallagher, NY2F, ARRL CEO.   While making the point for amateur experimentation in the 47 GHz band he states "...our best defense of spectrum has at its core vigorous and wide-ranging experimentation".    Mr. Gallagher continues with an interesting analogy defending the preservation of public microwave bands over doling out to commercial interests by asking "how much would the nation benefit from the sale of National Park Service land for commercial development?"

Nicely stated!

On a FlexNet network, each FlexNet or Xnet node uses regular polling of its
linked neighbors to verify that these links are currently available for
network routing.  An autorouter at each FlexNet or Xnet node exchanges network
wide routing data with its FlexNet or Xnet node neighbors.  Whenever link
conditions change anywhere within the network, routing data is updated network
wide very quickly.  Other systems such as URONode obtain for their own use,
destination and routing data from linked FlexNet or Xnet neighbor nodes.

A destination table with current network status info is maintained by each
FlexNet or Xnet node. It can be displayed by use of the <D>estination command.
In this table all destinations, where the autorouter knows a way to, are
shown.

This destination list can usually be found by use of the <A> command on any
FlexNet-Digi node or within the FBB BBS Users directory of an associated bbs.

This list is distributed via the Packet Network whenever it has been updated
with new information.  Look for a Bulletin, FLXDST @ NESBBS

The Radiogram Signature

"The place of Origin relates to the signature, and should make sense to the addressee as the place the signing party is located.  It stays with the message to the point of delivery.  ...  The Place of Origin given in the Preamble is the location of this individual."

Words of good will, such as "Best Wishes" or "Sincerely" are placed in the text of the message.

Of note, full information about the person for whom the message is originated should be included in the signature to allow them to be contacted if needed.  For example,

Station of Origin versus Place of Origin

I had a nice phone chat today with Bob, KB4RGB.   Bob pointed out 2 items in the Preamble that can be confused.  He prompted me to perform a review of Station versus Place of Origin.  (Material Courtesy of ARRL Publication):

Station of Origin
"The call sign of the amatuer station originating (creating) the message for the first introduction into the system is the station of origin.  This call sign must stay with the message to the point of delivery."

Place of Origin
"The Place of Origin is the location (city and state) of the party for  whom the message is created, not necessarily the location of the station of origin.  The Place of origin relates to the signature and should make sense to the addressee as the place the the signing party is location.  It must stay with the message to the point of delivery."

Example: N1DN in West Hartford creates a message for a Bob in Wallingford.  The Station of Origin would be N1DN.  The Place of Origin would be Wallingford.    The Signature would be Bob (the name of the person for whom the message was created).

Sunspot Low Reported on Space Weather News

Space Weather News for March 19, 2017
http://spaceweather.com

SUNSPOT COUNTS HIT 7-YEAR LOW: The face of the sun has been blank (no sunspots) for 13 consecutive days. The last time this happened was in April of 2010, near the end of an historically deep Solar Minimum.  The current stretch of blank suns heralds a new Solar Minimum expected to arrive in 2019-2020.

KFF - Stratton Brook State Park CT

There was a break in the winter weather this weekend to activate KFF - 1721, Stratton Brook State Park in Connecticut.

The access road was plowed allowing stationary mobile operation.  There were several State QSO Parties in progressed that helped with contacts.  I also self-spotted on the SKCC Sked Page and County Hunters spot page.

Snow and rain were nearby but thankfully never really materialized.

I was able to make the 10 contacts to qualify for a WWFF / KFF State Park Activation:

N5IR, ON4VT, IT9MUO, SN7Q , K4EEI, K4YFH, K0DEQ, WB9EAO, KK4WA, NC4QP, W4BOH, and HA8IB.  Thanks to all for the contacts.

Comments: "In the fine tradition of every teacher who has tried to using mnemonics to help remember...on Saturday Spring Ahead and Fall Back.    State treating the roads for the coming snow, it's still winter!  Out and about mobile, doing errands before the snow comes.  Had the radio on and good to hear activity on the net."

Radiogram Precedent

The PREAMBLE, the first part of the radiogram, consists of 8 parts:  Number, Precedence, Handling Instructions, Station of Origin, Check, Place of Origin, and Month/Day Filed.

The 2nd item in the Preamble is the PRECEDENCE.  This indicates how the message should be handled:

EMERGENCY - always spelled out.  This is for any message "having life and death urgency".
Priority (P) - an important message or official message
Welfare (W) - an inquiry as to the health and welfare of an individual.
Routine (R)  - the most common type of message (and the only type of message I have ever passed)
Exercise Messages (TEST) - a message passed for test or exercise purposes
Service (SVC) - indicates a service message "sent between stations" regarding message handling.  According to ARRL literature, SVC is not a precedence.

NTS Message Number

All radiograms have a preamble, consisting of the following parts:

Number
Precedent
HX - Handling Instructions
Station Origin
Check
Place of Origin
Time Filed
Month / Day

The message number is assigned by the station originating the message.  This number is permanently assigned to the message through to the point of delivery.   Understand that with a Service Message, the letters SVC can be placed in front o fthe message number.  However, this appears to not be used frequenlty these days.

Numbers are assigned by the operator of the station originating the message at their discretion.

Retro Journey to Packet Radio

I was a big user of computer BBS in the late 1980s (NOMUG - New Orleans Mac User Group).  The command line prompt and simple format of packet radio is quite appealing.  I'm working to get my Kenwood TM-D710 to connect with some local packet stations:
